Hamish Ogston Foundation Health Advisor, Professor David Warrell, has been Knighted

Health Advisor to the Hamish Ogston Foundation, Professor Sir David Warrell, has been appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George for services to global health research and clinical practice, in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Honours List 2022.

Professor Sir David Warrell has long been regarded a world leader in tropical medicine and his career has taken him around the world, working as a physician, teacher and researcher in many African, Asian and South American countries. He has simultaneously enjoyed a distinguished academic career, producing more than 400 research papers, articles and textbook chapters on infectious and tropical diseases, respiratory diseases, venomous animals, envenoming, and plant and chemical poisoning, alongside being consultant  to several organisations including the World Health Organisation,  the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the British Army, and establishing the Wellcome Tropical Medicine Research Programme in Thailand and  the Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Network.

Sir David’s counsel and connections have proven invaluable to the Hamish Ogston Foundation in establishing and developing its health-oriented initiatives. As a former Director of the Global Snakebite Initiative, he helped to establish the Hamish Ogston Foundation Education Grants Programme, which is designed to stimulate young researchers, snakebite community workers and clinicians to become activity involved in snakebite prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and both epidemiological and clinical research. The Foundation is very grateful for his continued support and sound advice in the area of tropical medicine.

Michael Vaughan, Health Project Director at The Hamish Ogston Foundation:The Hamish Ogston Foundation is delighted to congratulate David on his Knighthood (KCMG).  He has made an immense contribution to medical science and clinical medicine. The Foundation has benefitted enormously from his knowledge and experience as well as his selfless endeavour by giving so much of his time.

I, personally, have always enjoyed his amusing and challenging humour on trips to India, Vietnam and Myanmar where he was welcomed by so many as a friend. I have seen him unravelling the facts of a complicated snake envenoming case at the bedside in India and Vietnam and then giving invaluable advice contributing to the successful outcome.”
