Essay Competition extended to 28 February 2021
Update: because of the impact of the surge in Covid-19 cases in many countries we have decided to extend the deadline for essay competition submissions to 28 February.
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on medical research in general as resources have been diverted to urgent Covid-19 research.
The Hamish Ogston Foundation is offering five prizes of £500 for what are judged to be the best five essays on the following subject:
The impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on snakebite research and treatment.
The prizes are for pre-doctorate Junior Researchers and Clinicians in training posts associated with snakebite anywhere in the world.
In addition, the five winners will have their registration fee for the 2021 Venoms and Toxins Meeting paid by the Foundation. The meeting, Covid permitting of course, will be held in September 2021 in Oxford. The exact form which this conference will take will not be known until nearer the time.
This is an opportunity to express your thoughts and experiences with imagination and originality. It is not about a meta analysis of all that has been written on the subject or indeed the details of Covid science itself. When making a point which you think would be enhanced by references then please include them (Harvard Style). Personal experience is also encouraged to illustrate the points you are making. Do not think exclusively about problems but also their solutions. It is important to think about how you structure the essay to accentuate the arguments and conclusions you may wish to make.
The essay should be between 3000-5000 words in English using a Font size of 12 on A4 paper leaving 1.0-1.5 cm margins. The essay should obviously be your own original work and should not have been previously published. Only one essay per person can be submitted.
When submitting your essay please include a top sheet with your name, contact address, and current institution with a short description (100 -150 words) of your work as a Junior Researcher or Clinician. There should be a summary of the essay and why you decided to apply (150-200 word). Please do the following:
A. Post two copies of your essay to:
Ms Rosie Manby,
Hamish Ogston Foundation
45 Montpelier Walk,
Knightsbridge,
London, SW7 1JH. UK
B. Send an email to [email protected] informing us that the essay has been posted so that we can inform you when the essay arrives.
Closing Date: 28 February 2021
Prize winners will be contacted by April 2021
